The Supreme Court’s Enduring Role

An Institution at the Heart of our Democracy

The Supreme Court’s Enduring Role

For 150 years, the Supreme Court of Canada has played a fundamental role in the democratic life of the country. As you’ve seen throughout the seven modules, the Supreme Court settles the most complex disputes, clarifies the law, and protects its citizens’ rights and freedoms. Its decisions shape our laws, our institutions, and sometimes even our individual journeys.

Behind each ruling are people with a mission and a great responsibility: the judges, lawyers, and litigants who courageously bring their cases all the way to the top of the judicial system.

Though imperfect, the courts remain an essential forum for resolving disputes and giving a voice to those who do not always have one. In a time when public discourse can become polarized, the courts remind us of the importance of dialogue, careful listening, and reasoned judgment.

Understanding the Supreme Court means better understanding our society. We hope this course has provided you with the keys to grasp the Court’s role and how it works. Keep learning about the Court, question it, and critique it in an informed way. The law concerns us all!
