The Supreme Law
The Constitution of Canada
When the justices of the Supreme Court are deciding on a case, the Constitution often serves as their guiding light. The Constitution defines the fundamental rules and principles that govern the country.
This is why the Constitution is referred to as the supreme law of Canada. If a regular law is inconsistent with the supreme law of the Constitution, this law will be invalidated (“struck down”).
