The Day-to-Day of a Supreme Court Justice

Inside the Chambers

The Day-to-Day of a Supreme Court Justice

One of the most famous, confidential, and important rooms in the Supreme Court building is the conference room, where the justices deliberate on cases:

  • LIst itemRight before a hearing, the justices will hold a pre-conference to discuss pertinent information about the case to be heard.
  • Immediately after a hearing, they will hold a post-conference, where which each justice will express his or her initial views on the case.
  • The Chief Justice will then assign the case to a justice who will lead the drafting of a decision.

Make your way to the conference room: exit through the door behind the bench and move along the corridor. No one, not even law clerks, are allowed in the room while justices are discussing cases.
