Professor Mariève Lacroix discusses how engaging in comparative law can help researchers gain new perspectives, follow new paths, and learn to avoid taking any aspect of the law for granted.
Citing examples from her own experience in researching private law in Quebec, Professor Lacroix notes the usefulness of looking beyond our legal systems to discover new perspectives and to be inspired by alternate solutions to pressing challenges. In her work on the law of death and dying, for example, she has found it useful to look to the perspectives of key stakeholders to find out where understanding is lacking and where there are needs that are not being responded to. This plurality of voices is key to ensuring that the law is able to adequately respond to the real needs of all members of society.
