However, the educational system in Quebec places little emphasis on teaching legal concepts in schools. This has negative consequences, as many individuals find themselves confronted with problems of access to justice and overcrowded courts, without having the basic legal knowledge necessary to assert their rights.

Aware of this reality, law students at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law decided to highlight this often neglected aspect of access to justice. To do so, they conducted a Voxpop at HEC Montréal to measure the gaps in legal education by questioning university students about their knowledge of the legal system. In this process, they benefited from the expertise of Kim Bélanger-Baillargeon, school content manager at Éducaloi, who accompanied them in exploring the issues related to the lack of legal education in Quebec high schools.

During this initiative, it became clear that many university students do not have a satisfactory knowledge of our legal system. This deficiency can be attributed in part to the lack of adequate legal education in high schools. Students are not being taught the basics of understanding their rights and obligations and the mechanisms of the justice system.

Faced with this worrisome reality, Éducaloi is proposing actions to fill these gaps in legal education. The organization develops adapted school content that integrates essential legal concepts into the high school curriculum. Through interactive and accessible educational tools, students can gain a better understanding of the legal system and the skills necessary to assert their rights.

This has helped students realize how crucial it is to recognize that legal education plays a fundamental role in society. By educating young people from an early age about the fundamentals of the law, we equip them with the knowledge to become informed and active citizens. By investing in legal education, we promote equal access to justice and contribute to a more just and equitable society.

This visual advocacy video was produced by Tayian Dogan, Sandrine Lavoie, Raphaëlle Richard and Catherine Sylvestre, law students who participated in the Visual Advocacy/Law and Film course offered at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section.

Information plays an essential role in access to justice.
