On May 26, 2022<\/strong><\/a>, Professors Alexandre Lillo and Thomas Burelli, co-holders of the Chair in Pedagogical Innovation in the Faculty of Law, Civil Law Section at the University of Ottawa, launched the culmination of a year\u2019s worth of work on a major creative challenge: transforming a university course on video games into an interactive game in which you play the part of the hero.<\/p>\n\n

Set in a <\/span>dystopian<\/span> version of <\/span>our<\/span> N<\/span>ation’s<\/span> Capital (<\/span>known<\/span> as<\/span> Neo<\/span>-Ottawa), <\/span><\/span>Reset 2047<\/span><\/span><\/a> puts<\/span> players<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>into<\/span> the <\/span>shoes<\/span> of Fred Gallant, a <\/span>young<\/span> rookie in the Anti-<\/span>Video<\/span> Game Squad <\/span>who<\/span> must enforce the 25-year-old Game Over <\/span>law<\/span>. In <\/span>doing<\/span> so<\/span>, <\/span>he<\/span>\u00a0explores the twists and <\/span>turns<\/span> of <\/span>the <\/span>video<\/span> game<\/span> industry<\/span>, <\/span>from<\/span> the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>creation<\/span> of <\/span>games<\/span> and\u00a0<\/span>their<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>consumption<\/span>, to <\/span>their<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>marketing and <\/span>their<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>impact on the <\/span>environment<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The video game industry has grown tremendously over the past 30 years, generating $119.6 billion in 2018 \u2013 more than the film industry! North America is one of the most dynamic regions when it comes to the creation and consumption of video games. But as the field has grown, many legal issues have emerged. The involvement of lawyers has thus become paramount in this field.\u202f <\/p>\n\n

As an adaptation of the DRC 4731 \u2013 <\/span>Video<\/span> Game Law course, <\/span>offered<\/span> as an open online course (OOC), Reset 2047 <\/span>is<\/span> a <\/span>pioneering<\/span> achievement<\/span> in the Canadian <\/span>higher<\/span> education<\/span> landscape<\/span>. It <\/span>was<\/span> made possible by a <\/span>grant<\/span> from<\/span> eCampus<\/span> Ontario as part of <\/span>its<\/span> <\/span>Virtual Learning <\/span>Strategy<\/span><\/span><\/a>, in<\/span> partnership <\/span>with<\/span> the Civil Law Section, <\/span>Jurivision<\/span> and La Cit\u00e9 <\/span>College<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

For the official launch of the game, Professors Burelli and Lillo were joined by their partners who helped bring the game to life: Patrick Walton (artistic director of the project and multimedia specialist at Jurivision), Guillaume Saint-Pierre (programmer), Melitza Charest (scriptwriter and doctoral student in French literature at the University of Ottawa) and Luc Groulx (graphic designer, now a graduate of La Cit\u00e9 College). <\/p>\n\n

The event is moderated by Rachel Nadeau, PhD student in law and content designer, with the special participation of Aline Germain-Rutherford, vice-provost for academic affairs at the University of Ottawa.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
