For 15 years, sociologist Patrice Corriveau and historians Andr\u00e9 Cellard and Isabelle Perreault have been mapping suicide in Quebec across 250 years. Their corpus: 18,000 cases from coroner’s archives, including more than 1,000 farewell letters. A collection unlike any other in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you bring that kind of research to a general audience without losing either its rigour or its humanity? These archives tell stories that statistics alone can’t capture. Marie, a young woman at the turn of the 20th century, took her own life. Her farewell letters tell the real story: she was pregnant and unmarried. In that era, that meant social ruin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To <\/span>give<\/span> <\/span>voice<\/span> to <\/span>these<\/span> <\/span>testimonies<\/span>, the <\/span>team<\/span> <\/span>joined<\/span> forces <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>illustrator<\/span> Christian Quesnel to <\/span>create<\/span> a <\/span>graphic<\/span> <\/span>novel<\/span>: <\/span><\/span>Vous avez d\u00e9truit la beaut\u00e9 du monde: Le suicide sc\u00e9naris\u00e9 au Qu\u00e9bec depuis 1763<\/a>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This format makes it possible to depict sensitive scenarios honeslty, without exploitation. Photographs would have been too raw. Academic articles would have been too technical and reached too few. It also gave the researchers place themselves within the narrative \u2014 sharing their doubts, their ethical debates, their methodological choices \u2014 pulling back the curtain on research work that usually remains out of sight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Widely<\/span> <\/span>acclaimed<\/span> in <\/span>artistic<\/span> and<\/span> <\/span>scientific<\/span> <\/span>circles<\/span>, <\/span>as <\/span>well<\/span> as <\/span>with<\/span> the <\/span>general<\/span> public. <\/span><\/span>Vous avez d\u00e9truit la beaut\u00e9 du monde<\/span><\/span> <\/span>demonstrates<\/span> <\/span>that<\/span> <\/span>research<\/span> must <\/span>find<\/span> new <\/span>paths<\/span> \u2014 and go to <\/span>meet<\/span> <\/span>its<\/span> audience <\/span>where<\/span> <\/span>it<\/span> <\/span>already<\/span> <\/span>is<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sociologist Patrice Corriveau and his colleagues spent 15 years suicide in Quebec across 250 years. To share their findings with the rigour and sensitivity the subject demands, the team partnered with illustrator Christian Quesnel to create a graphic novel: Vous avez d\u00e9truit la beaut\u00e9 du monde: Le suicide sc\u00e9naris\u00e9 au Qu\u00e9bec depuis 1763. The format made it possible to portray difficult scenarios honestly, without exploitation, and to reach a broader audience.
