Yet these tragedies remain largely invisible in legal and public discussions. <\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">In the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">econd <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">install<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">ment<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\"> of the documentary series <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">The Right to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\"> Farm<\/span><\/em><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\"> Professor Sarah Berger Richardson, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">whose research focuses on <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">law in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">agriculture and the food industry at the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\"> Univers<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">ity of Ottawa, e<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">xplores a phenomenon as devastating as it is unrecognized: fires in livestock facilities<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW63242889 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW63242889 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>A 2020 report from the Humane Society International (now Humane World for Animals) revealed a troubling absence of preventative and protective measures for livestock and poultry in case of barn fires. This event brings together researchers, professionals, policymakers, and members of civil society to discuss current issues in food law and policy. The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the legal and ethical issues of fires in agricultural buildings. After a close call with a fire on the farm that left a lasting impression, he worked with his veterinarian Dr. Isabelle Maheu to establish an emergency plan. <\/p>\n\n<p>Despite the devastating impacts of agricultural fires, agricultural buildings are surprisingly often exempt from Canadian security standards applicable to other types of buildings. <\/p>\n\n<p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicolas Morello, lawyer and the director of Droit Animalier Quebec (DAQ), emphasizes that this inaction runs contrary to obligations under Quebec law. Indeed, given that the <em>Civil Code of Qu\u00e9bec<\/em>\u00a0recognizes animal sentience since 2015, regulators should be responding proactively to ensure farm animals are protected in the event of a fire.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-small-font-size\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:0px;margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-top:0;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:0\"><blockquote><p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>In Quebec, since 2015, Droit animalier Qu\u00e9bec has tallied that there are more than 60,000 animal beings burned alive every year.<\/em><\/p><\/p><cite>Nicolas Morello, lawyer and director of Droit animalier Qu\u00e9bec (DAQ)<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n<p>In turn, doctoral student and lawyer Daphn\u00e9e M\u00e9nard explores the non-binding norms in the industry such as the Codes of Practice for the care and handling of farm animals of the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) that exist to fill the legislative gap. <\/p>\n\n<p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This latest installment of\u00a0<em>The Right to Farm<\/em>\u00a0is a call for collective responsibility.
