Otakuthon, Quebec’s largest festival of Japanese culture and animation, recently welcomed Professor Thomas Burelli and five brilliant students from the Civil Law Section (Marie Dykukha, Amanda Buttice, Gabriel Cadieux, Haoran Liu and Bhromor Rahman) to explore the fascinating and emerging field of video game law. The event highlighted the intersection between law and the dynamic world of video games, captivating an audience of gamers, cosplayers and enthusiasts. <\/p>\n\n
At the heart of the initiative was Professor Thomas Burelli, whose expertise in law and video games added an original dimension to Otakuthon’s programming. Panels covered topics such as how video games represent legal concepts, the legal issues surrounding e-sports and their integration into the Olympic Games, and the controversial presence of \u2018dark patterns\u2019 in video games. <\/p>\n\n
The public response was extremely positive. The packed rooms and active participation of the audience demonstrated a strong interest in the legal issues surrounding video games. Many participants approached the speakers with questions, anecdotes and a desire to learn more. Some members of the audience are now studying video game law in the Civil Law Section! <\/p>\n\n
By bridging the gap between law and video games, this initiative demonstrated how legal professionals can engage with popular culture to make complex subjects accessible and relevant to new audiences.
