The Power to Adopt Laws

Who has the power to make laws? In this section, our guests introduce us to some basic concepts about the concept of legislators and the division of legislative powers in the Canadian federal system.

Canadian Federalism

Canada is a federal state in which legislative powers are shared between different levels of government. In Canada, there are two levels of government: the federal government and the provincial or territorial governments. Laws are therefore made by the Parliament of Canada or the provincial and territorial legislatures, depending on the powers granted to them by the Constitution Act, 1867. The table below provides a summary of the powers assigned to the two levels of government.
